Course Description:

Applied Social Studies is a course for people who wish to embark on a programme of study leading to a career in social care.  One is introduced to the theory and practice of the key areas of social studies and social care.  It’s the ideal starting point if one wishes to progress to further studies or employment in a variety of community, health and educational organisations.  Students explore key areas of social studies by addressing a wide range of social issues.  Integral to this course is the development of empathy and understanding when working with people in a variety of care environments.  This course helps one to plan for the holistic needs of the individual.

Entry Requirements:

  • Leaving Certificate (traditional or applied) / Other equivalent at FFQ 4
  • Successful completion of interview
  • Candidates must be in a position to obtain Garda Clearance
  • Candidates must supply two written references (character, work or educational)
  • Candidates must be in a position to source two weeks work experience placement themselves.

On completing this course students can make an informed choice about pursuing further study and a career in Health services, Voluntary organisations, Education services, Youth services and Family and Community organisations

Successful completion of this award facilitates entry on a competitive basis through the CAO to a range of Third Level institutions nationwide leading to awards at a higher level on the National Framework of Qualifications
